Mystery plaques puzzle Parisians
Mystery plaques puzzle Parisians
Locals and visitors to Paris have been baffled by a series of memorial plaques that have sprung up on buildings across the city. It has long been a tradition to mount such signs on the outside of buildings where noteworthy people lived or events occurred, but on closer inspection some of them turn out to be fake. In the eastern part of the city one that appeared on a building read: "On April 17, 1967 - nothing happened here." For those of you unfamiliar with such things happening, this is what's known as Poetic Terrorism. Via one.point.zero

700-year-old picture of 'Mickey Mouse' found in Austrian church
What appears to be a 700-year-old picture of Mickey Mouse has been discovered on a church fresco in Austria. Walt Disney first sketched his character in 1928 but an Austrian art historian spotted an uncannily similar drawing. The painting, which has been dated back to the early 14th Century, is in the Community Church in Malta, Carinthia. Next to a large sketch of St. Christopher is a clear drawing of the mouse. Originally spotted on DP. Now there's a Metafilter discussion as well.

Is it time for the malls to start playing Christmas carols yet? Nonstop? Slowly etching away at our collective brains like Bing Crosby flavored sulfuric acid? Awww shucks, that stuff doesn't really kick in until after Thanksgiving right? DARN! Oh well, something to look forward to I guess. And while you all are waiting, please enjoy some pre-holiday Ten Thousand Monkeys. Think of it as eggnog for your medulla oblongata, with extra rum! As always, check it out. Recent images from space satellites reveal hundreds of little-known primeval forests and stands of ancient trees scattered all across the United States. Scientists say these trees -- some dating before the rise of the Roman Empire -- provide an unequaled record of droughts and floods that can help them understand historic disasters and predict environmental changes.

There has never been a better time to read the work of comic book legend Warren Ellis, the creator of Transmetropolitan, Planetary and Global Frequency. From the formulaic pornography of news coverage to the on-going ineptitude of our world "leaders", Ellis delivers an intelligent and savagely funny antidote to global idiocy.

Z'EV - ACOUSTIC PHENOMENAE
Z'EV - ACOUSTIC PHENOMENAE
Z'ev (born Stefan Weiser) straddles the nearly unbridgeable and highly volatile gulf between the art world and the music industry. Acclaimed as one of the world's best and most original percussionists, Weiser began recording in the late '60s in a handful of psych-out projects. By the late '70s, he took on the Z'ev moniker to explore the "spatial poetics" of the polyrhythmic clamor he had established with his hand-built percussive instruments.Translating Z'ev's kinetic performances onto sound-only recorded media does him a bit of an injustice, for it is an awesome sight to witness him heave a kinetic sculpture across a stage. These hulking percussive instruments, culled from the junkyards of the globe, consist of unwieldy pieces of sheet metal, giant coil springs, innumerable interconnected pipes, and several dozen 10-gallon plastic water bottles connected with heavy chains. Z'ev gracefully hurls the sculptures/instruments across the stage as a physical extension of his body, imbuing his crescendos of intense rhythmic crashing with a surprisingly calligraphic quality. The master of Elemental Music speaks out in a few places. Just pick up the music, and let it do the talking. Here's a Russian source, The Egg and We. If you don't read Russian, you'll need patience and a translator. Too many sources to list here, so have a blast! Of course, the obligatory FREE MP3 Link.

New way to send hidden messages

Since the dawn of civilization, humans have yearned for a way to send hidden messages. And now Intrasonics, a start-up in Cambridge, England, says it can send these messages over loudspeakers.-DW

The lyricism of litter
One man's trash is another man's treasure. It's also pretty cool magazine material.Take, for example, a battered, creased algebra test found on a street in St. Louis. It shows a student's futile yet creative answers on a logarithm exam -- including illustrations and an introspective rhyming couplet. The student's score on the test: Zero."Whereas other kids would do a little work to get partial credit, he doesn't even try to fake it. He tries to have fun with it in an impressive way," Davy Rothbart says. "The teacher doesn't recognize that at all. He's just not being appreciated for his incredible talent." Via BB

Who Serves Satan? A Demographic and Ideological Profile
Who Serves Satan? A Demographic and Ideological Profile
Abstract: In order to test conventional wisdom about modern Satanists, an online questionnaire was used to gather data from 140 respondents. Based on this data, a demographic and ideological profile was constructed which indicated that the statistically-average Satanist is an unmarried, white male in his mid-twenties with a few years of college. He became involved in Satanism through something he read in high school, and has been a self-identified Satanist for more than seven years. Raised Christian, he explored one non-Satanist religious group beyond the one in which he was raised before settling into Satanism. His view of Satan is some variety of non-theistic humanism and he practices magic. The length of average involvement and the often reflective responses to open-ended questions indicates that, far from being confined to adolescent rebels, many Satanists are reflective individuals who--despite the fact that youthful rebellion was usually a factor in the beginning--have come to appropriate Satanism as a mature religious option.

Plastination and Art
Plastination is a unique method of preserving durable anatomical specimens while retaining a lifelike condition. Special thanks go out to numerous donors who have contributed human organs and bodies.
A scientist in Germany has developed an entirely new way of looking at anatomy - one that allows the best exploration yet of how bones, muscles, organs and systems in our body really look, and how they work together. Some examples of his work on display now in an exhibition in Basel, Switzerland. Called "Anatomy Art: Fascination Beneath The Surface" visitors can see more than 200 "plastinated" anatomy specimens of Professor Gunther von Hagens.

What Did Poe Know About Cosmology? Nothing. But He Was Right.
In 1848, by then a nationally celebrated poet, Edgar Allan Poe published "Eureka," a 150-page prose poem on the nature and origin of the universe. The work, an overheated grab bag of metaphysics and cosmology, was a flop. A reviewer for Literary World likened it to "arrant fudge." A hundred years later T. S. Eliot summed up the critical consensus. "Eureka," he wrote, "makes no deep impression . . . because we are aware of Poe's lack of qualification in philosophy, theology or natural science."

Battlefield laser blows up speeding shell
Weapons that travel far faster than the proverbial speeding bullet are as little as five years from use in combat, say defense officials who used a laser to shoot an artillery shell out of the sky this week. In a first-of-its-kind feat, the Army used a high-energy laser built by TRW Inc. to heat the shell, fired from a howitzer at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, and cause it to explode in flight. The test was successfully repeated a second time.

"I got really into this "time-travel cult" called Ong's Hat when a computer-game programmer I know told me she was contacted by a physics scholar who said that a bunch of her recent games reflected their canon. This dude told my friend that someone from Ong's Hat had befriended her and inspired her to create certain games without her realizing it. Whoa, right?" - Jane Magazine
