Hair-Fire-Clubs
I am not looking forward to the conspiracy theories that will get cooked up around this tragedy. Didn't anyone think about the fact that lighting up pyrotechnics on a small stage full of hair spray boys can be, um, DANGEROUS? FLAMMABLE? COMBUSTIBLE? VOLATILE? Never mind. Seems to be a trend going on here...

'Voices' Coalition: Today's FCC Ruling is a 'Mixed Bag' for Consumers
Today, the Federal Communications Commission approved new rules governing the telecommunications sector. The commission maintained a strong role for state officials to promote residential phone competition through network leasing arrangements. However, it considerably loosened key consumer protection aspects of federal telecommunications law as it applies to broadband Internet service.

Evidence strengthens for massive black hole at galaxy's heart.
The path of a new star attests to a super massive black hole at our galaxy's centre.
Astronomers have long thought that most of the Milky Way's mass is packed into a monstrous black hole. But this is hard to prove, partly because black holes suck in passing light and are invisible.

'Agent defeat weapons' ready for use
Prototypes of unconventional munitions designed to destroy stores of chemical and biological weapons could see their first use in Iraq, analysts believe.

"Much of this work is classified, but it would seem reasonable to assume that an ADW capability would be available," he told New Scientist. "A good deal of work in this area has already been done."

Another novel weapon that is likely to be in the US arsenal is the High Power Microwave (HPM) device reported on by New Scientist in August 2002. This destroys electronic equipment in command, control and communications targets by unleashing an intense electromagnetic burst.

Molecular secret of Special Forces toughness
Molecular secret of Special Forces toughness
Special Forces soldiers have neurological differences that make them more resilient to post-traumatic stress disorder than the average soldier, say researchers.

A study of soldiers based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, found that Green Berets were much less likely to suffer symptoms of PTSD after a week of gruelling exercises that simulated being captured and interrogated by the enemy.

The elite soldiers produced more of a molecule called neuropeptide Y in their blood than regular soldiers. This molecule is generated by the body to help calm the brain in times of extreme stress, says Matt Friedmann, director of the US National Center for PTSD in Connecticut, which carried out the research.

Bill O'Reilly Assists Cyber Terrorists by Falling for Defamation Scam
Last night on the "Factor," Bill O'Reilly read an email, on the air, from Stephen DeVoy, dissident writer and owner of several dissident websites. The only problem is, Stephen DeVoy did not write the letter. The letter was written by a group of anti-Arab/anti-Muslim Cyber Terrorists waging a death threat campaign against Stephen DeVoy. Apparently, Mr. O'Reilly is so keen to defame the antiwar movement, that he fails to adequately verify any defamatory information sent his way. We have proof that Bill O'Reilly fell for this scam.

Here's the URL of a copy of the post where the Cyber Terrorist organization, KOBE, announced their plot to defame DeVoy.

How I learned to start worrying and fear the "e-bomb"
How I learned to start worrying and fear the "e-bomb"
By John Paczkowski
Among the new weapons that might be used in any military assault against Baghdad is one known as the "e-bomb" -- a device which uses high-velocity electromagnetic pulses to wreak havoc on electrical and telecommunications systems. These munitions are designed specifically to avoid the collateral damage caused by conventional explosives, but scientists familiar with the effects of high-power microwaves say that while civilians hiding in underground bunkers would be immune to an e-bomb attack, their counterparts above ground would not. "All the fluid in their body cells would instantly vaporize into steam. It would happen so fast, you wouldn't even be aware of it," one scientist told Janes Defense Weekly. "If, on the other hand, you were caught in the sidelobe of the beam, or even by a weak reflection of the main beam off a metal surface -- which could easily happen in a city -- you would probably suffer terrible burns as well as permanent brain damage." It's worth noting that the United States is likely not the only country hard at work on weapons like the e-bomb. Indeed, the possibility that an e-bomb could be used in the U.S. has been considered by government officials. Said Rep. Curt Weldon during a House subcommittee hearing in 1997: "If I am the commander of North Korea and I have one nuclear weapon and that weapon is in the range of 1 to 10 kilotons, which I assume it is, and if I have the capability of a Nodong or Taepodong 2 system, which I assume can reach an altitude of 250 miles quite easily ... and I want to do something to hurt the United States, I think the weapon of choice is to launch that device in the air and wipe out our smart capability and then dare us to respond, because we haven't killed anyone, we haven't hurt any buildings, and we, being a moral nation, what is our president going to do? Is he going to set off a nuclear strike against North Korea, when they have not killed one person in this country, but it would devastate our entire infrastructure? That is what concerns me."

Music publishers launch new peer-to-peer liability sharing client
Music publishers launch new peer-to-peer liability sharing client
By John Paczkowski
Bertelsmann AG today found itself on the receiving end of a lawsuit filed by a group of music publishers who contend that the German media giant contributed to the wide-scale infringement of their copyrighted works by investing in ill-starred peer-to-peer venture Napster. The suit, whose plaintiffs include Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, writers of songs like "Jailhouse Rock," "Hound Dog" and "Stand by Me," accuses Bertelsmann of subsidizing Napster's "unprecedented piracy." Bertelsmann "made a deliberate and calculated business decision to continue the infringing service in order to preserve Napster's valuable user base for Bertelsmann's own benefit," the complaint says. "But for the conduct of Bertelsmann complained of here, however, Napster would have been shut down -- and the rampant piracy on its service stopped -- long before July 2001." The suit asks for damages in excess of $17 billion.

Theory suggests snowmelt on Mars might have supported life
Theory suggests snowmelt on Mars might have supported life
Large areas of Mars may once have been covered with snowbanks that served as greenhouses, trapping enough heat to melt some of the snow into water -- and possibly nourishing life, scientists reported Wednesday.

The new theory, based on data from two orbiting spacecraft, could explain one of the red planet's most puzzling features: hundreds of gullies carved into steep cliffs over the past million or so years, at a time when Mars was far too cold for water to flow.

In a report Wednesday, Philip Christensen of Arizona State University proposed that the gullies were created by water flowing out the bottom of snowpacks that existed in the area between the poles and the equator between 100,000 and 1 million years ago.

Word 'bursts' may reveal online trends
Word 'bursts' may reveal online trends
Searching for sudden "bursts" in the usage of particular words could be used to rapidly identify new trends and sort information more efficiently, says a US computer scientist.

Jon Kleinberg, at Cornell University in New York, has developed computer algorithms that identify bursts of word use in documents.

While other popular search techniques simply count the number of words or phrases in documents, Kleinberg's approach also takes into account the rate at which the word usage increases.

Kleinberg suggests that the method could be applied to weblogs to track new social trends. For example, identifying word bursts in the hundreds of thousands of personal diaries now on the web could help advertisers quickly spot an emerging craze. [Full Story]

From Demo: 10 technologies to watch
From Demo: 10 technologies to watch
Out here amid the cliffs and crags not far from Phoenix, a few dozen companies gather each year to show off the most promising new technology. The show is called Demo because it's focused on demonstrating how new products work -- no PowerPoint slides allowed.

Demo tends to be attended by fledgling companies with bright ideas, though the likes of Microsoft and IBM are also invited frequently. This year many companies showed products that squeeze more value out of the technology we already have, a seeming response to the fact that not many businesses seem eager to take chances.

Of the 60 companies invited, I picked 10 I think are poised to change the way we interact with technology in the next three years or so -- either because their product itself was so impressive, or because their idea is sure to inspire others in the industry to pursue similar goals. | See Them Here

Extra Dimensions Showing Hints Of Scientific Revolution
The concept of extra dimensions, dismissed as nonsense even by one of its earliest proponents nearly nine decades ago, may soon help solve seemingly unrelated problems in particle physics, cosmology and gravitational physics, according to a panel of experts who spoke Feb. 15 at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting in Denver.

"It doesn't happen often that you get a confluence of ideas and experiments that come together and it's something that obviously would change your whole way of looking at the universe," said one of the panelists, Joseph Lykken, Professor in Physics at the University of Chicago and a scientist at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.

US plan for new nuclear arsenal

"The Bush administration is planning a secret meeting in August to discuss the construction of a new generation of nuclear weapons, including "mini-nukes", "bunker-busters" and neutron bombs designed to destroy chemical or biological agents, according to a leaked Pentagon document."
The Los Alamos Study Group says " The Study Group deserves no credit for unearthing this document. We didn’t dig it up, and it was not given to us with the idea that we would publish it. Quite the contrary. We have come to believe, however, that it is our responsibility to make it availability in its entirety, to do so rapidly (e.g. before any war in Iraq) -- and to do so from a position outside Washington, DC in order to enhance the vitality and diversity of debate about U.S. nuclear weapons."
Here is a summary of some of the important parts of the planning process. These meetings show, in a degree that is rare in publicly-available documents, the bold sweep of nuclear weapons planning in the Bush Administration.

"Said Study Group director Mello, “These plans deserve outrage -- first in the United States, and throughout the world. It may or may not be obvious that if allowed to proceed further -- especially in the present jingoistic atmosphere now prevailing in Washington -- the process outlined here will be quite hard to stop.

Artist urges public to steal his pictures
A German artist is encouraging the public to steal pictures from his latest exhibition.

Photographer Gerhard Zerbes, 40, specialises in nudes.

He is now planning an exhibition at which visitors won't be able to buy any artwork.

Instead, they will have to steal the pictures if they like them.

Zerbes told the Express newspaper he is currently looking for sponsors to finance the exhibition, called KlauKult (StealCult).

Visitors to the show will be under camera surveillance, Zerbes said.

"I'm looking forward to seeing how creative people can be."

I probably wouldn't hate you any more than how much I currently hate you, because I don't think that would be humanly possible. I would probably punch you in the face though. I hate everybody and everything I find on the Internet. my site and the "Law and Order" website are the only places worth visiting. Richard convinced me to make a site dedicated to all the people I know and hate, maybe so his stupid "Something Awful" website won't suck as much. even though my site is on "Something Awful", I still hate him and his website. Hacker gains access to 5.6 million Visa, MasterCard numbers
A computer hacker gained access to more than 5.6 million Visa and MasterCard account numbers by breaching the security of a company that processes transactions for merchants, the card associations said Tuesday.

Visa USA spokesman Mike Riley said that there has been no report of fraudulent activity involving the accounts and that Visa was monitoring the situation.

He said he could not identify the third-party processor or say exactly when or how the hacker got access to the account information, which involves some 3.4 million Visa accounts and 2.2 million MasterCard accounts.

A source with knowledge of the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity said that the incident occurred in early February.

The Real Reasons for the Upcoming War wth Iraq:
A Macroeconomic and Geostrategic Analysis of the Unspoken Truth
Although completely suppressed in the U.S. media, the answer to the Iraq enigma is simple yet shocking. The upcoming war in Iraq is mostly about how the ruling class at Langley and the Bush administration view hydrocarbons at the geo-strategic level, and the overarching macroeconomic threats to the U.S. dollar from the Euro The Real Reason for this upcoming war is this administration's goal of preventing further OPEC momentum towards the Euro as an oil transaction currency standard. However, in order to pre-empt OPEC, they need to gain geo-strategic control of Iraq along with its 2nd largest proven oil reserves. This essay will discuss the macroeconomics of the "petro-dollar" and the unpublicized but real threat to U.S. economic hegemony from the Euro as an alternative oil transaction currency. The following is how an astute and anonymous friend alluded to the unspoken truth about this upcoming war with Iraq...| Via Sierra Times

Biology to make mini machines
Computers of the future will be built not by factory machines, but by living cells such as bacteria.
That at least is the vision which has been outlined by scientists speaking at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting in Denver.
They have described how wires can now be made by yeast organisms, and how solar panels could be built using substances produced by sea sponges.
Researchers believe these kind of technologies will be essential if we are to continue to shrink the size of electronic devices.

Clear Channel Prepares To Milk War For All It's Worth
Clear Channel Prepares To Milk War For All It's Worth
People working at Clear Channel radio stations KFBK and KSTE
received this memo in which they're told to get ready for the big day when the war officially breaks out. On reading this, one is likely to envision a cartoon-figure of a company boss running around in headless-chicken mode, spewing out instructions, taking a breath maybe once every thirty seconds or so. The tone is wild and excited - and extremely competitive. "There's no such thing as overkill with a story like this", says the Boss. "Remember, no fishing shows, gardening shows. We are AT WAR." Oookay, whatever you say. Doesn't matter to me, I wouldn't listen to one of your crap stations unless someone bribed me with lotsa dinero. Or maybe even not then. We all know Clear Channel is a tool after what they pulled after 9/11 with that banned song list. Now we see blatant exploitation right in front of us: "Talk shows, find the right time to work local callers into the coverage. People will be angry, frightened--the emotion of America IS part of the story. Use it!" And be sure to look at the suggestions for guests to have live on air; the ordering of the list is quite revealing in and of itself.

Diary of a Stalking
Diary of a Stalking
"People harrass you with phone calls and lawsuits about what goes on in QuickTopic???"

They do indeed. In particular, one person actually harrassed not only me, but Steve Yost, who runs QuickTopic out of pocket, until Steve killed the QuickTopic in order to stave off what he saw as a genuine threat of a lawsuit.

I preserved the deleted QuickTopic on a Yahoo! group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/diaryofastalking/

and faced further harrassment, including phone calls at all hours, etc.

I have never deleted a post from any of the BB quicktopics (other than my own) and I never, ever will. I have never deleted a userid (I don't have this capability, but I could, by switching conferenceing systems, and I wouldn't).

I have told people that they are unwelcome, but never threatened to sue them should they decline to accept my invitation to the world. I have never contacted QT posters out-of-band to harrass them.

BB's trolls have, at various times, invaded my and Mark's privacy, harrassed me by phone and email, threatened me with legal action, and personally insulted me (and Mark's family) with the vilest language imaginable.

One troll even suggested that I should be deported from the country.

I have never retaliated beyond telling these people what I think of them and inviting them to get bent. It's a shame that some people can't (or won't) distinguish that from censorship, but there you have it.

Writing's on the Wall in 3-D Cave
For a decade, scientists and engineers have used virtual reality and other so-called "immersive technologies" to help them visualize complex designs and natural phenomena.

A project underway at Brown University is taking that concept a step further by exploring how these 3-D computerized environments could expand our understanding of the written word

"Immersive technologies are apt to become a dominant art form in our culture," said Robert Coover, the high priest of hypertext and an associate professor of English at Brown. "What we're trying to do here is ensure that they develop as places for literature. | Via CoC

'Genetic changes' triggered Man's artistic abilities
'Genetic changes' triggered Man's artistic abilities
A CREATIVITY gene that evolved about 50,000 years ago was the spark that kindled the development of the modern mind, an expert on human origins said yesterday.
An explosion of art, culture and individual expression that took place in Africa between 100,000 and 50,000 years ago may have been triggered by biological changes in the human brain, according to Richard Klein, Professor of Anthropological Sciences at Stanford University in California.

The Stanford Prison Experiment: A Simulation Study of the Psychology of Imprisonment
The Stanford Prison Experiment: A Simulation Study of the Psychology of Imprisonment
Welcome to the Stanford Prison Experiment web site, which features an extensive slide show and information about this classic psychology experiment. What happens when you put good people in an evil place? Does humanity win over evil, or does evil triumph? These are some of the questions we posed in this dramatic simulation of prison life conducted in the summer of 1971 at Stanford University.

How we went about testing these questions and what we found may astound you. Our planned two-week investigation into the psychology of prison life had to be ended prematurely after only six days because of what the situation was doing to the college students who participated. In only a few days, our guards became sadistic and our prisoners became depressed and showed signs of extreme stress. Please join me on a slide tour of describing this experiment and uncovering what it tells us about the nature of Human Nature.

Researchers Find It's Easy to Plant False Memories in Minds of Some People
Remember that wonderful day when Bugs Bunny hugged you at Disneyland? A study presented Sunday shows just how easy it can be to induce false memories in the minds of some people.

More than a third of subjects in the study recalled that theme-park moment impossible because Bugs is not a Disney character after a researcher planted the false memory. [Full Story] | Via The HIVE

Alien 'abductees' show real symptoms
Alien 'abductees' show real symptoms
People who claim to have been kidnapped by aliens have a tendency to believe in fantasies and suffer disturbing experiences in their sleep, scientists have found.
But the researchers say "abductees" also believe in their experiences so deeply that they display real stress symptoms similar to those of traumatised battlefield veterans.
The latest research on the "taken" phenomenon was unveiled at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Denver.

"This underscores the power of emotional belief," Professor Richard McNally, from Harvard University, told the BBC. [Full Story]

Secret of Drake hoax revealed after 70 years / Society's prank on UC professor went awry
Secret of Drake hoax revealed after 70 years / Society's prank on UC professor went awry
The last secret of one of the greatest historical hoaxes in the history of the West has finally been revealed -- it was a joke pulled on an eminent UC Berkeley professor by members of E Clampus Vitus, which describes itself as either a historical drinking society or a drinking historical society.

It involves the mysterious "Plate of Brasse" supposedly left by Sir Francis Drake in Marin County 424 years ago when he claimed what he called New Albion for England. The plate was discovered near San Quentin prison in 1936 and hailed by Professor Herbert Bolton as "one of the world's long-lost treasures. " He called it authentic "beyond all reasonable doubt."

Bolton died in 1953, full of years and honors. The plate was accepted as genuine until 1977 when new tests showed it to be a forgery -- for one thing, the brass had been rolled in the 20th century, not the 16th. It was a huge embarrassment for the university and the historical community.

There was one last mystery: No one knew who was behind the hoax or why.

The Sopranos meets Raymond and Peter
The Sopranos meets Raymond and Peter
In the course of a federal racketeering investigation, FBI agents and prosecutors received court authorization to wiretap the home telephone of Federico "Fritzy" Giovanelli, a Genovese crime family soldier. The feds hoped to hear Fritzy discussing mob business with fellow New York wiseguys, conversations that would then form the basis for a RICO prosecution against Giovanelli and Co. As it turned out, during the six months the FBI was listening, Fritzy was fairly careful -- there was little talk of mayhem and only occasionally did he slip and refer to his criminal enterprises (and then it was often just about his gambling operation).

But while the tapes do not contain the sort of reckless chatter that sent John Gotti away for life, they're remarkable for the funny, profane, and whimsical conversations Fritzy had with his Mafia cohorts, namely Frank "Frankie California" Condo, a fellow Genovese soldier. Like two old hens, Frank and Fritzy would gab daily about life's rich pageant, their conversations a stream-of-consciousness potpourri. While most men their age were out working, the duo would convene on the telephone in the early afternoon -- both speaking from their homes -- and launch into wildly veering conversations. A typical 15-minute chat could touch on sex, work, girlfriends, vitamins, movies, enlarged hearts, cholesterol counts, and marital strife. Peppered with malaprops and featuring Frank and Fritzy's Central Casting voices, the tapes are a raucous, slice-of-life look at two hoodlums.

Plan Approved To Save U.S. Digital History
Plan Approved To Save U.S. Digital History
Here's the flip side of the digital age's magic act: It's also making information disappear.

"The digital history of this nation is imperiled by the very technology that is used to create it," said Librarian of Congress James H. Billington.

So yesterday the Library of Congress announced the next step in the effort to preserve that history: congressional approval of its plan for the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP). The $100 million initiative was launched by Congress in 2000 to do for digital media what the world's largest library already does for printed matter.

"This plan is the beginning of the creation of a national network to preserve the digital memory of our country," said Laura Campbell, associate librarian for strategic initiatives.

It faces a daunting task. The popular Internet search engine Google claims access to just over 3 billion Web pages, a massive collection of information in a constant state of change.

In fact, according to data from the Library of Congress, the average Web page has a lifespan of just a couple of months. Of all the Web content made in 1998, nearly half had disappeared by 1999.

"Much of what has been created is no longer accessible," Billington said. "And much of what disappears is important, one-of-a-kind material that can never be recovered, but will be desperately looked for." [Full Story]

750 Women Go Nude In Protest

Only the latest in a long string of recent nude protests . . . Needless to say, we like this trend . . . After all, what is more humanist than the human body itself? Unadorned with the corruptive influences of fundamentalist religion (i.e. Ashcroft, Bin Laden, et al.) and clothes gone bad (i.e. Hilfiger, Nike, et al.)?

Internet security strategy released
Internet security strategy released
The White House on Friday released the nation's first cybersecurity strategy, containing about half the recommendations of a wider-ranging earlier draft and largely leaving the task of Internet security to voluntary efforts by corporations and individual Americans.

After kicking off its crafting of the strategy with a high-profile event in the fall in Silicon Valley, the administration quietly posted the final version on its Web site Friday, saying the low-key release was prudent amid a heightened terror alert.

    Coincidence By Design?
    Coincidence By Design?
You've found success; you drive an expensive car, own a mansion, and have money to burn. On top of all this, you're fairly young, you work out, and can make witty remarks. But you haven't found your dream wife yet. The women you date don't live up to your image of the ideal woman.
You've seen her, though. Maybe you've noticed her in a restaurant, or in the lobby of a hotel. Maybe you passed her on the sidewalk a few months ago. Then again, maybe you have yet to catch a glimpse of her.

    So what now?

You won't meet her via the classifieds or a dating agency, because her kind don't go there. You can't just walk up to her and utter some silly pick-up line, because she'd rightly despise you if you did. Even if you do have the good fortune to meet her at a wedding or a business meeting, you'll be disappointed to find out that she's already with someone else. It would be useless anyway; guys are hitting on girls like her all the time.

What's left? You aren't some law-breaking psycho. You can't STALK her.

    But WE CAN.

GAK! So, ya'll'll have to forgive me—I'm running around a little like a chicken with his head cut off. I'm in the process of "getting my affairs in order" (as they say) in order to make a rather terrifying/exhilarating move across this great wide ol' country.

So, please forgive me if I don't include any witty openers this issue ... it's all still in there, I promise, the good stuff; some great new art, new chapters from our current novels (one from an old M10K favorite: MonkeyCompline (our submissions editor), one from a brand spankin' new monkey), a couplea interesting stories, some beautiful poetry, and what issue would be complete without a column from our roving reporter Quintus?

As always, check it out. Let us know what you think (even if it's "I'm in pain! And I'm wet! AND I'M STILL HYSTERICAL! No, no! Don't hit! Don't hit! It only increases my sense of danger!").
