Idle Mist / Vana Espuma Fan Page

Borges: Influence and References
http://www.themodernword.com/borges/borges_infl_useche.html

Andrés Useche

Writer, director, actor, composer and graphic artist Andrés Useche was born in Manizales, Colombia. Critics have pointed out influences by Sartre, Camus, Berkeley, Einstein and Freud in his work, and Useche has recently expressed his new passion for the work of Shakespeare, Poe, Zhuang Tzu, Descartes, Hume, Nietzsche, Heisenberg, Bohr, Wittgenstein, Jung, Cortázar and of course: Borges.
In the 1998 Idle Mist film, the dream world and the "phenomenal" world of the dreamer converge, revealing "the secret drama" of existence, questioning the audience's perception of reality, as one of the "diverse intonations of a few metaphors," the history of this metaphors which constitute, according to Borges, universal history. This metaphor, of all waking being a dream, Useche intuited and developed on his early Vana Espuma work and later rediscovered in Shakespeare, The One Thousand and One Nights and all his other aforementioned favorites. Borges also found it in the Moslem Koran, the Jewish Genesis, the Cabalist Sepher Yetzirah, Pythagorus, Bacon, Carlyle, Bloy and Mallarmé among the many others which he explored in both his fiction and non-fiction works.

Like in Shakespeare's "Tempest", and "The Circular Ruins" by Borges, the characters of Idle Mist find they are "of the stuff that dreams are made of" and true to the name of Useche's production company: Paradox Arts, the work is both circular and open-ended. It also attests to the reversibility of the creative process but not as much as his subsequent feature film Waking Shadows in which an echo of Jung's theory of the unconscious and archetypes seems to represent the true driving force behind our actions and perceptions in the material world. ADVENTURES WITH AN ICE PICK: a short history of lobotomy

excerpt:

AMERICA, 1847: a highly competent and, by all accounts, pleasant manual laborer of Irish extraction named Phineas Gage is involved in rock blasting operations in mountainous terrain. In the course of one sadly uncontrolled explosion, an iron bar is picked up by the force of the blast and driven clean through the front part of his head. Phineas is sent flying, but, to everybody's surprise, he survives the removal of the protruding bar. As he recovers, however, it is observed that his personality has dramatically changed, though his memory and intelligence remain apparently unaffected. In 1868, a physician named Harlow from Boston writes about him: "His equilibrium, or balance, so to speak, between his intellectual faculties and animal propensities seems to have been destroyed. He is fitful, irreverent, indulging in the grossest profanity (which was not previously his custom), manifesting but little deference for his fellows, impatient of restraint or advice when it conflicts with his desires." The now extremely rude Phineas Gage is an object of immense medical interest, for it seems clear, from his somewhat crude experience of psychosurgery, that one can alter the social behavior of the human animal by physically interfering with the frontal lobes of the brain.

First comic to be ruled obscene in Japan
Manga publishers fear they will become targets of police crackdowns on pornography.

In a ruling that could deal a blow to publishers, the Tokyo District Court on Tuesday found a comic book obscene and gave a suspended prison sentence to its publisher.

Motonori Kishi, 54, president of Shobunkan Corp. in Tokyo, was sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for three years, for distributing 20,000 copies of the adult comic "Misshitsu" (Honey room) in 2002 that had graphic depictions of sex.

It was the first major ruling in two decades on obscenity in a published work. It is also the first examining whether a comic book is obscene.

"Clean" nuclear space launches?
When it comes to launching millions of pounds of material into space, nearly everyone knows about the Orion Project. Blow up a series of nuclear bombs under your dairy-aire and ride the explosion on up. Unfortunately, the Orion spewed out so much radiation that it just wasn't a feasible launch option. If we want commuter trips to space, we're going to have to find another way. Well, it turns out that NASA's been doing quite a bit of research on Gas Core Nuclear Rockets, an ultra-powerful nuclear rocket that puts out almost no radiation. This research has spurred a fascinating new generation of ideas on reaching the cosmos. Could inexpensive cruises to the moon happen within our lifetimes?

Now why does that sound like a terrible idea to me?

Actor-Writer Spalding Gray Missing

NEW YORK - Actor-writer Spalding Gray, noted for his one-man shows in which he tells of his life in artful, witty monologues, has been reported missing, police said.

Police in New York City and in Southampton, N.Y., were searching for the 62-year-old actor, who has homes in both places.

Gray, whose works include the autobiographical film "Swimming to Cambodia" (1987), remained unaccounted for at midday Tuesday, police said.

He was reported missing over the weekend by his wife, Kathleen Russo, Southampton Police Lt. William Armstrong said Tuesday. The couple had not been to their Southampton home since Christmas, he said. Police in New York were investigating a report that he may have been planning a ski trip this week to Colorado, Armstrong said, but declined to elaborate.

Lust declared virtue, not vice
Lust has been wrongly branded a vice and should be "reclaimed for humanity" as a life-affirming virtue, according to a top philosopher.

And why not? It's a brave thing for the Beeb to be posting this kind of material, since the revered English academe of times long past played a large part in creating the mind/body split and the heaving up of moralistic arguments against our unavoidable, some say sacred, passion and carnality.

"I got really into this "time-travel cult" called Ong's Hat when a computer-game programmer I know told me she was contacted by a physics scholar who said that a bunch of her recent games reflected their canon. This dude told my friend that someone from Ong's Hat had befriended her and inspired her to create certain games without her realizing it. Whoa, right?" - Jane Magazine
