In a obvious attempt to head off this action, the White House said Wednesday it postponed a poetry symposium because of concerns that the event would be politicized. Some poets had said they wanted to protest military action against Iraq.
The symposium on the poetry of Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes and Walt Whitman was scheduled for Feb. 12. No future date has been announced.
When John O'Neill went to Yemen to investigate the terrorist attack on the USS Cole in 2000, he was frustrated in his investigation by the actions of the U. S. Ambassador to Yemen, Barbara Bodine, who was supposedly so incensed by O'Neill's undiplomatic attitude towards the Yemenis that she barred him from returning to the country. Barbara Bodine was an appointment of the Clinton administration, and George Bush wasn't selected President until later, but the American Ambassador still made it impossible for O'Neill to investigate what happened in Yemen.
Later, when Bush was President, he expressly called off any investigations of bin Laden and the bin Laden family (the fact that Bush continues to get a free pass for this from the U. I myself feel that our country, for whose Constitution I fought in a just war, might as well have been invaded by Martians and body snatchers. Sometimes I wish it had been. Teacher reprimanded for letting students read books, not watch TV
"To Ms. Ehrenfeld: This morning I observed that during the morning news program, you and your students were engaged in activities other than watching television."
So began the official letter of reprimand placed in my personnel folder by the principal at the elementary school in Maryland where I was teaching 3rd grade at the time. Odd as the accusation was, it was made even odder by the fact that my students were reading when the principal caught them not watching television. She had walked in, and there they were, sitting as silently as a group of 3rd graders can, every one of them absorbed in a book.

The general rules of this game are no different from any other drinking game. A drink is either a shot or a good gulp from a beer (or cider). Different events call for different numbers of drinks and all you do is watch the speech and play along. If all goes well, you'll be unconscious by the time they show the other party's response.
Late one night while sharing a pharmacological product with a spook I met in the northeastern part of the United States, I mentioned I was studying cryptology.
"Cryptology is the future," he responded emphatically. "It's what's going to protect us from Big Brother."
Since he worked for the National Security Agency (NSA), the thought did occur to me that many would have taken the position that he and his colleagues were Big Brother. But I had learned years ago not to demonize people on the basis of an accidental profession. After all, if an ex-CIA employee like Kerry Thornley could become a staunch libertarian, the creator of Zenarchy and implied co-author of the Erisian holy book Principia Discordia [1], then there was hope for all of us. I additionally believed that one of our best defenses against the national security state was the perennial proclivity of clandestine organizations to piss off their own employees.
I'm really excited by George Bush's latest reason for bombing Iraq: he's running out of patience. And so am I!
For some time now I've been really pissed off with Mr Johnson, who lives a couple of doors down the street. Well, him and Mr Patel, who runs the health food shop. They both give me queer looks, and I'm sure Mr Johnson is planning something nasty for me, but so far I haven't been able to discover what. I've been round to his place a few times to see what he's up to, but he's got everything well hidden. That's how devious he is.
As for Mr Patel, don't ask me how I know, I just know - from very good sources - that he is, in reality, a Mass Murderer. I have leafleted the street telling them that if we don't act first, he'll pick us off one by one.
Some of my neighbours say, if I've got proof, why don't I go to the police? But that's simply ridiculous. The police will say that they need evidence of a crime with which to charge my neighbours.
They'll come up with endless red tape and quibbling about the rights and wrongs of a pre-emptive strike and all the while Mr Johnson will be finalising his plans to do terrible things to me, while Mr Patel will be secretly murdering people. Since I'm the only one in the street with a decent range of automatic firearms, I reckon it's up to me to keep the peace. But until recently that's been a little difficult. Now, however, George W. Bush has made it clear that all I need to do is run out of patience, and then I can wade in and do whatever I want!
Friday, January 24, 2003 - WASHINGTON - The bodies of U.S. soldiers killed by chemical or biological weapons in Iraq or future wars may be bulldozed into mass graves and burned to save the lives of surviving troops, under an option being considered by the Pentagon.
Since the Korean War, the U.S. military has taken great pride in bringing home its war dead, returning bodies to next of kin for flag-draped, taps-sounding funerals complete with 21-gun salutes.
But the 53-year-old tradition could come to an abrupt halt if large numbers of soldiers are killed by chemical or biological agents, according to a proposal quietly circulating through Pentagon corridors.
"I just want you to know that I think you're one of the most insane, and unintelligent people I've ever had the displeasure of being interested in enough to read past the first worthless sentence of the person's rhetoric..."
A government as eager as ours to invade another country would normally be expected to have excellent reasons for going to war. And yet virtually no other country accepts the reasons our rulers have offered for attacking Iraq, and the United States seems to have lost sight of how aggressive it appears to the world. The official explanations for the invasion are, indeed, so inadequate, we are forced to look elsewhere for better ones.

New Jersey state Senate bill 1909 proposes to allow human cloning, provided the fetus is aborted. In other words, a human may be cloned, implanted into a female surrogate, and then harvested for organs and body parts provided that the cloned human is killed prior to being born.
Originally intended to be a ban on cloning, NJ Senate bill 1909 was twisted around by legislatures (as so often happens) to encourage cloning. How did they manage to spin it?
By redefining cloning to necessarily involve the "newborn" stage:
As used in this section, "cloning of a human being" means the replication of a human individual by cultivating a cell with genetic material through the egg, embryo, fetal and newborn stages into a new human individual.
The bill also allows for trafficking in human body parts. According to a Jan. 13, 2003 Bergen, NJ Record article:
In its present form, the bill could allow biotechnology companies to raise cloned babies to harvest stem cells or even body parts and, while making it illegal to buy or sell embryonic or fetal tissue for profit, it also allows "reasonable payment" for embryo production and preservation costs. Such a sloppy definition could generate a market in human guinea pigs, [Marie Tasy, the legislative director for New Jersey Right to Life] said.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Colin Powell promised that a U.S. military occupation would hold Iraq's oilfields "in trust" for the Iraqi people.
In an interview with U.S. newspapers on Tuesday, released by the State Department on Wednesday, Powell said the Bush administration was studying different models for managing the Iraqi oil industry if the United States invades.

A: Oil. The US Government is broke; so deep in debt that all the income tax paid by all the citizens cannot keep up with the interest payments. The American people are burdened by high taxation, most of which is hidden in excises, fees, tariffs, etc. and passed onto the citizen hidden in the price of consumer goods. The government has had to recently borrow more money just to make the payments on the money it already owes, and borrows so much money that it drives up interest rates, which means YOU pay more for the money you need to borrow as a result. All businesses take that increased interest, plus the taxes and fees they pay and pass them onto you in the final retail price. You would be amazed just how much of the purchase price of anything you buy eventually tracks back to government.

Let me say that not only will they be guestimating who the terrorist are, the rest of the people will have their privacy protected by private firms that build profiles of "Individual Americans". - note they only seem to mention Americans as the target of their information gathering.

The search engine reveals three pages of results which list letters to the editors of august publications including the Boston Globe, the Star Press, the Suburban Chicago Courier News, and many many more.
They all have a similar form, starting: "WHEN IT COMES to the economy, President Bush is demonstrating genuine leadership. The growth package he has proposed takes us in the right direction by accelerating the...."
Not so surprising.
You might think one letter writer has got a bee in his bonnet and has decided to post off his or her thoughts to every paper in the US.
Except for one thing. They're all written by different people...
We are psychologists and social scientists who have studied and worked with trauma, fear, humiliation and violence, and who have studied the psychology of conflict, enmity, terrorism, domination, and creative ways of ending cycles of violence and retaliation. As war preparations accelerate, we see evidence for a clear and present danger that can be prevented.
As psychotherapists, we are bound by an ethical code which states that if we are aware that one is dangerous to oneself or others, we are legally required to warn those in danger. Our duty to inform takes precedence over all ethical considerations. We cannot remain silent in the face of avoidable danger. It is our professional opinion that the war now being planned might trigger a number of violent reactions, including massive traumatization of innocent civilians.
Rex 84 called for many military bases to be closed and turned into prisons, based on the pretext that if a mass exodus of illegal aliens crossed the border, they would be quickly rounded up and detained in detention centers by FEMA.
A more honest and realistic scenario would be the detention of Americans. Under "Rex" the President could declare a state of emergency, empowering the head of FEMA to take control of the internal infrastructure of the U.S. and suspend the Constitution.
The President could invoke Executive Orders 11000 through 11004 which would draft all citizens into work forces under governmental supervision, empower the postmaster to register all men, women, and children, seize all airports and aircraft, and seize all housing to establish forced relocation of all citizens.
Congressman Henry Gonzales clarified the question of the existence of civilian detention camps by stating, "The truth is yes - you do have these standby provisions and the plans are here...whereby you could, in the name of stopping terrorism...evoke the military and arrest Americans and put them in detention camps."
