Ah, summertime. Birds chirp, butterflies flit, bumblebees buzz, and testosterone rips through the post-Lilith landscape of arena rock festivals. So dudes, slap some PABA-free SPF 30 on the ol' tattoos and dive into the sweaty pit!

Better yet, ditch all that and check out something fun like LADYFEST in Olympia, home of all the best indie things, like K and Kill Rock Stars. If you’d rather venture down South for new girly bands, Labor Day will find GIRLS ROCK! happening in New Orleans.

Or join me on the road, where I'll be listening to a half-dozen excellent songstresses: Two Ton Boa, eX-Girl, Meg Lee Chin, Ute Lemper, Allette Brooks, and Lois Maffeo w/Brendan Canty.

Two Ton Boa: Two Ton Boa
(Kill Rock Stars CD)

First up is Two Ton Boa, an EP worth the price of ten average full-length CDs. Sherry Fraser’s singular style of delivery is equal parts sensuality, bravado, and strength; she slurs and cajoles her luscious vowels and consonants amidst a bludgeoning, double-bass carnival of sound. Maybe you noticed a TTB song in the background of the film Cruel Intentions, growling about how "she’s coming up from behind." Collabs include Rachel Carns and Radio Sloan of The Need, and Brian Sparhawk (ex-Fitz of Depression).

This, my friends, is what you always hoped punk rock would grow up to be.

Sample Lyrics:

from title track:

My heart is floating in a seasick bag of meat

My will is broken and my tongue has lost her feet

My throat unravels spilling out this hopeless cancer

It feels so nice

To be a dopesick topless dancer

eX-Girl: Kero! Kero! Kero!
KIKI Poo Records

Holy freakin’ Nippon experi-punk-pop-o-rama, batman! Shitcan any notion you have about cute Japanese girl music. eX-Girl are undoubtedly heavier, bigger, and genuinely, geniusly weirder than that (though all three members are ridiculously adorable). When they take the stage, complete with giant beehive wigs that have aliens in cockpits, this trio slams out big beats, melodic hooks, and quirky vocals. Luser moi did not obtain their undoubtedly-amazing a cappella album at their show (hey, I promised Philip, who first turned me onto eX-Girl, that I’d get him a t-shirt–so that’s where my dough went). ANYway, I can wholeheartedly recommend Kero Kero Kero, their frog-o-riffic current release. And for goddess’ sake, see ’em on tour!

Sample Lyrics:

from "Tofu Song":

dad: Take flies away above your head at first.

If you don’t wanna hit your head to edge of tofu to die.

child: Shut up, shut up, shut your mouth!

from "Space Mushroom":

Smash the cube!

You’re just a ruler for Mush-Room
