Allette Brooks: Silicon Valley Rebel
self-release

Things I like about "folk" music: witty stories and social commentary. Things that bug me about "folk" music: whiny voices and overstatements. Lois Maffeo & Brendan Canty: The Union Themes
Kill Rock Stars

Lois. Simple words lilt out of this woman’s mouth with calm, honest clarity, yet the songs often hold an angsty edge–kinda like a submerged version of Elliott Smith. The Union Themes, a collaboration with Fugazi’s Brendan Canty, seems almost too plain at first. But let this quiet, post-punk-indie-folk album wash over you a few times, and its slightly bitter, realistic heart will beat through.

Sample Lyrics:

from "Handwriting":

The handwriting’s on the wall

You’re already halfway out the door

And I’m still stuck here wanting more

The anguish belittles me

If I only had a bit more nerve

I’d give you just what you deserve

Pardon me

But is it too soon to ask?

When are you gonna let me back?
