Brassy ~ Got it Made

Wiiija

There’s something to be said for having a befitting name, and Brassy are just that. With familiar, bouncing club beats, spirited turntable tricks, chunks of ripe and ripping guitar Got it Made is the perfect album for getting ready to go out on the town. The slick, street smart slick yelps of Muffin Spencer (sister of one Jon Spencer) and Karen Frost evoke a vision of Beastie Boys in red leather miniskirts or Luscious Jackson after a case of Red Bull. While several of the 17 tracks display repetitive basic structures, and most songs clock in at over 120 bpm, each song is tweaked with rambunctious individuality and carbonated charm.

Brassy is all about barely controlled, energetic excess that could either land them in jail or shoot them to the head of the class. The sound is full and anything but shy; all the parts (phat beats, guitars, lyrics, samples, scratching) are tumbled together, then the seams are ground down with industrial-strength sonic sandpaper. It’s a lovely, somewhat silly mess that makes a beeline from the ears to the toes with obvious skill and a boundless sense of adventure. –Scott D. Lewis
